The White House admitted US President Joe Biden recently used a CPAP device to treat sleep apnea, after medical tape marks were seen on both sides of his face on Wednesday morning.
“Since 2008, the president has revealed his story with sleep apnea in extensive medical reports,” White House spokesman Andrew Bates said. “He used a continuous positive airway pressure machine last night, which is common for people who have it.”
An official familiar with the matter said Biden had begun using the device in recent weeks to improve sleep quality.
According to CNN, the 80-year-old Biden, the country’s oldest president, had suffered from sleep apnea in the past, and medical records released in 2008 indicated that he had a recurring problem with sleep apnea.
He mentioned a health record issued by a doctor Biden in 2019 that sleep apnea “was considered, but his symptoms improved significantly after sinus surgeries.”
Polls show that the majority of Americans have concerns about Biden getting old. And about 73% of the respondents in a Reuters poll conducted last April said that they consider that Biden’s advanced age does not qualify him to work in the government. A majority of 63% of Democrats agreed.
But Biden’s doctor said he was in good health and “fit to perform his duties” in February, after he underwent a medical examination.
