US President Joe Biden will deliver his annual State of the Union address on Thursday. This time the speech to Congress is mainly seen as the kick-off of his campaign for the presidential elections in November.
The Democrats are still busy with their primaries and Biden does not yet have enough support to be called the official candidate. In practice, this is most likely a matter of time. The biggest concern for the president’s campaign team is whether he can defeat Republican Donald Trump.
Voter research shows that 81-year-old Biden is far from certain of support in a number of constituencies and target groups that helped him win four years ago.
Polls show that many Americans think Biden is too old. Some of his voters also have difficulty with his government’s support for the government in Israel in the fight against Hamas. Followers of American politics are curious how he will deal with this in his State of the Union, what accents he will place in his campaign and whether and how he will attack Trump.
Biden will speak on Thursday in a joint session of Congress, which consists of the House of Representatives and the Senate. The speech is scheduled to start at 9:00 PM local time.
