The White House said that US President Joe Biden learned that his Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had prostate cancer only on Tuesday, January 9.
As European Pravda writes, US National Security Council Coordinator John Kirby said this at a briefing, reports Reuters.
“He (Biden – ed.) was not informed until last (Thursday) that Secretary Austin was in the hospital. He was not informed until Tuesday morning that the root cause of the hospitalization was prostate cancer,” he noted.
No one at the White House knew about Austin’s diagnosis until Tuesday, Kirby said.
The agency recalled that Biden spoke with Austin by phone on Saturday, so it is not clear why the president learned about his diagnosis only the day before.
Let us remind you that the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center announced that Austin had was diagnosed with prostate cancerand due to complications from surgery, he was urgently hospitalized earlier in the year.
A physical examination in early December 2023 revealed Austin had early-stage prostate cancer, according to a hospital statement. The operation took place under general anesthesia on December 22, and the next day the head of the Pentagon was discharged from the hospital.
But January 1st Austin was hospitalized again. with severe abdominal pain, which was the result of complications from the operation. The initial examination then revealed a urinary tract infection.
The statement from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center does not explain why the Pentagon did not report its chief’s health status for several days to either the White House or the public, which has already drawn criticism.
Austin himself later reported that he was recovering, and added that he understood the media’s concerns and admitted “that he could have done a better job of ensuring the public was properly informed.”
The White House said that US President Joe Biden is not considering possibility of dismissal Austin after he hid his hospitalization for several days.
