US President Joe Biden expressed support for the football team representing his ancestral county of Mayo in Ireland, during his recent visit. He concluded his speech in the town of Ballina with the familiar chant “Mayo for Sam,” referring to the team’s aspirations of winning the All-Ireland championship. Mayo has not won the championship in over 70 years, despite reaching the final 11 times since 1989. The US President was asked by a local politician and former Mayo footballer to say a prayer for the team’s success. Fine Gael TD for Mayo Michael Ring also personally appealed to Mr Biden to mention the Mayo Gaelic football team in his speech. The team won the National Football League earlier this year, but suffered a decisive defeat in the first round of the regional Connacht championship. Fans will hope that Mr Biden’s comments might bring new hope for their success.
