US President Joe Biden Expresses Confidence in Israel’s Compliance with Laws of War and Discusses Middle East Situation with Israeli and Palestinian Leaders

US President Joe Biden said that he is “confident” that Israel will act according to the laws of war in its conflict with the Palestinians, adding that the deployment of American forces in the Middle East is unnecessary.

In an interview with the “60 Minutes” program on CBS News, Biden expressed his belief that the “Hamas” movement must be completely eliminated, noting the need “for there to be a path toward a Palestinian state as well.”

Biden warned that the threat of terrorism in the United States has increased due to tension in the Middle East.

The US President stressed that Iran “continuously supports Hamas and Hezbollah, and there is no clear evidence that Iran is behind this war.”

Biden added: “My message to Iran is not to cross the border and not to escalate the war.”

Biden pointed out that Israel would make a mistake if it occupied the Gaza Strip, stressing that “Washington can pay attention to the war in Israel and Ukraine and at the same time maintain its global defense.”

Two statements issued by the offices of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas stated that US President Biden spoke by phone with each of them on Saturday.

According to Netanyahu’s office, the Prime Minister informed Biden that “unity and determination” are necessary to achieve Israel’s combat goals against Hamas in Gaza, adding that he thanked the President for his support.

For his part, the White House said that Biden affirmed the United States’ firm support for Israel during his call with Netanyahu.

Biden informed the Israeli Prime Minister that Washington is working with the United Nations and countries in the Middle East “to ensure that innocent civilians have access to water, food, and medical care.”

Abbas’s office said that the Palestinian President stressed, during his call with Biden, the complete rejection of “the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza” after the bloody attack launched by Hamas.

According to the White House statement, in his call with Abbas, Biden stressed “the Palestinians’ right to dignity and self-determination,” and also condemned the Hamas movement.

Biden pledged to Abbas to provide “full support” to the Palestinian Authority, considering that “Hamas does not defend the right of the Palestinian people to dignity and self-determination.”
