US President Joe Biden Experienced Covid-19 Rebound, What Condition? page all

KOMPAS.com – President of the United States (USA) Joe Biden Reportedly re-infected with the corona virus, after being declared cured.

Doctors refer to Biden’s condition as rebound Covid or recurrence that is susceptible to patients taking Paxlovida drug produced by Pfizer.

White House physician Dr Kevin O’Connor said in a letter on Saturday that Biden had experienced another Covid-19 after undergoing the test.

O’Connor explained that Covid-19 patients can generally recover from the disease, but can still be tested positive again afterward.

“Therefore, there is no reason to restart treatment at this time, but we will obviously continue to watch closely.” NBC NewsWednesday (27/7/2022).

To note, Paxlovid is an antiviral drug that is usually given to Covid-19 patients at risk of experiencing severe symptoms.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted an emergency use permit for Paxlovid for patients 12 years of age and older.

On the other hand, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says, that only a small percentage of people taking Paxlovid report effects of ‘rebound‘ as Biden experienced.

“When you look at the research, it generally doesn’t happen very often,” says Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser.

Fauci, who was also infected with Covid-19 last June, admitted that he had experienced rebound Covid-19.

The symptoms include runny nose, sore throat, and fever that reappears after being declared cured.

Prevalence rebound Covid-19 reaches 5 percent

Pfizer’s clinical trials of patients taking Paxlovid showed that around 1 to 2 percent of people tested positive for the coronavirus again after recovering or recovering from the virus. rebound Covid.

White House Covid response coordinator, Dr. Ashish Jha said the Covid-19 rebound rate reached 5 percent among tens of thousands of people who had taken the drug.

“If you look at Twitter, it feels like everyone has recovered. But it turns out there’s actually clinical data,” said Jha.

A small study in June found that less than 1 percent of Covid-19 patients experienced symptoms returning after an average of about nine days of recovery after taking Paxlovid.

In a larger study of 13,600 Covid-19 patients, which had not yet been peer reviewed, 6 percent of symptoms returned within a month of treatment.

Aditya Shah, an infectious disease specialist at the Mayo Clinic who led the small study, explained that it was difficult for patients to self-diagnose cases rebound Covid.

“The actual number of rebound cases could be as high as 5 to 10 percent, but I don’t think it’s as common as the general public expects,” Shah said.

In this regard, the CDC states that the symptoms of Covid-19 can be cured about two to eight days after taking Paxlovid is stopped.

People who continue to test positive for COVID-19 may still be infectious, so the CDC recommends that they return to isolation for at least five days if the illness recurs.

The treatment is not expected to be long

Some disease experts suspect that the Paxlovid regimen is too short to clear the virus in certain people.

Professor of medicine at Michigan State University, Dr. Peter Gulick said, natural immunity can not work fast enough, because the patient must take it within five days of symptoms appear.

“When one uses Paxlovid, it might decrease viral load it gets to the point where the body doesn’t react clinically to any kind of inflammation,” Gulick said.

Some people may still have the virus left in their bodies, especially if they have viral load high or the virus spreads to areas that are not easily accessible by drugs. In this case, even the symptoms may eventually return.

Disease experts explain that it is possible that older people, or people with compromised immune systems are more likely to come back with symptoms or positive for the corona virus, after taking Paxlovid, but there is no good data to support this theory.

However, they noted the symptoms rebound Covid appears to be milder than previous infections.

“Paxlovid works very well and prevents serious illness, rebound or not rebound. That’s why the president consumes it,” concluded Jha.
