US President Joe Biden announces progress in securing humanitarian pause in Gaza war

US President Joe Biden said progress has been made in securing a so-called “humanitarian pause” in the war in the Gaza Strip.

The American president said this to the press on Saturday. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is conducting discussions about this in the Middle East.

Biden answered “yes” when asked if there has been progress on the issue. The president was asked the question as he left a church in his home state of Delaware.

Earlier on Saturday, Blinken said in the Jordanian capital Amman that a humanitarian pause is needed to provide Gaza with essential aid such as food, water and medicine. The only aid supplies entering Gaza at the moment go through Egypt. But only a limited number of trucks are allowed at the Rafah border crossing at a time. According to human rights organizations, this represents a fraction of the humanitarian aid needed for the more than 2 million inhabitants of the Gaza Strip.

American media report, citing diplomatic sources, that Hamas has indicated that it is willing to release all hostage civilians in exchange for a five-day break in the fighting.
