Details: The two sides are trying to renew efforts to stabilize relations amid rising tensions over issues including Chinese military activity near Taiwan and US attempts to prevent China from gaining access to the latest American technology.

U.S. officials said the leaders will discuss a range of issues, including the prospect of restoring military communications channels that China closed last year following then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.

“The President is committed to taking the necessary steps to restore what we consider to be the central military bond between the United States and China,” one US official said.

Biden will express concern to Xi about China’s “dangerous” and “provocative” military activity around Taiwan, he said.

Officials say the summit does not represent a change in U.S. policy toward China, but a recognition that states need effective communication channels.

Let us remind you:

According to media reports, Biden and Xi Jinping plan to hold bilateral talks in San Francisco on November 15 when Asia-Pacific leaders gather for their annual economic meeting. October 27 Biden received the Chinese Foreign Minister and the head of the office of the Chinese Communist Party’s Central Committee for Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi. Before that, China’s top diplomat also met with Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan. The meetings were the latest in a series of high-level contacts between the United States and China in an effort to stabilize rocky relations between the two countries over the Taiwan issue, China’s maritime aggression, the downing of a Chinese balloon over US territory, and concerns about China’s role in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
