US President Joe Biden’s administration on Thursday asked the US Congress for more than $13 billion in new military spending for Ukraine, citing the need for continued support for the country after an “unprovoked” Russian invasion.
The funding will help Ukraine and other vulnerable countries “affected by Russia’s unprovoked and brutal invasion,” according to a letter sent by Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Shalanda Young to Congressional Republican Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and other congressmen.
About $10 billion of the new military funding is earmarked for several measures aimed at replenishing the Defense Department’s stockpiles and speeding up production of new equipment.
“The president has assured that we will support Ukraine protecting its sovereignty for as long as it takes,” Young said.
This strategy “has successfully brought together our allies and partners and equipped Ukraine to defend itself against Russian aggression,” she added.
The White House request is part of more than $21 billion in new Ukraine-related spending that the White House requested on Thursday. Before these funds can be allocated, they require the approval of the Congress.
The Ministry of Defense recently announced that by July 25, the United States had committed to providing Ukraine with security support in the amount of more than 43.7 billion dollars.
