US President Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping have shaken hands for the first time in more than a year. Biden received Xi in California at an estate outside San Francisco. It is seen as an important meeting between two world leaders at a time of wars and economic problems.

At the reception, Biden emphasized that their conversations so far have always been frank, without restraint and useful and that they always understand each other well. “We must ensure that our competition with each other does not lead to conflict.” He also said that the countries can work together on AI and climate.

Xi said a lot has happened since their last meeting. There is economic recovery, but it is slow, he said. Protectionism (protecting trade interests) also puts great pressure on the global economy, Xi believes. “Those are big problems. But the planet is big enough for both of our countries to prosper.” He emphasized that both leaders bear a great responsibility as they have the largest bilateral relationship in the world and therefore cannot turn their backs on each other.

Tense relations

Relations between the two countries are very tense, due to military conflicts, arguments over chip technology and disagreements over artificial intelligence (AI). But Biden and Xi appear open to rapprochement. The meeting has been eagerly awaited, but no major developments are expected.

Earlier today it was announced that both countries will revive their joint working group for climate cooperation and have promised major growth in renewable energy.

The conversation takes place on the sidelines of an APEC summit, an economic conference of Asian and Pacific countries, in which both leaders are also participating.
