US President Biden Calls for Better Protection of Civilians in Gaza as Humanitarian Crisis Worsens

Civilians in Gaza must be better protected, US President Joe Biden said about the worrying developments in the area. But Israel said Thursday that it will continue the fight against Hamas.

A US security envoy discussed with Israeli officials on Thursday how to better protect civilians during the war against Hamas in Gaza. Biden called on Israel to “save lives.”

Humanitarian problems are increasing in the Gaza Strip. It is a “true catastrophe”, say aid organizations. In addition to the continuous bombings, the lack of food, clean water and shelter now poses a danger. “These are the ideal conditions for diseases and viruses,” said a UNICEF spokesperson.

“Hundreds of thousands of traumatized people are exhausted and are not receiving care because the system is at a standstill,” doctors and care providers told the news agency Reuters.

Humanitarian crisis does not seem to be a reason to alleviate struggle

But the humanitarian disaster does not seem to be a reason for Israel to stop or slow down the fight. “It will take more than a few months, but we will win and we will destroy Hamas,” Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said during a visit with White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.

Sullivan said in an interview that he has spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about when his forces will transition from high-intensity military operations to a more precise, targeted phase. Sullivan did not give a direct answer to that question, although he did expect the military actions to continue for “some time.”

Asked whether he wants Israel to scale back attacks by the end of the year, the US president replied: “I want them to focus on saving civilian lives. Not that they stop going after Hamas, but that they take more action.”

Biden does believe that the Israeli army “should be more careful” with military actions in Gaza. He again emphasized that Netanyahu risks losing international support and understanding for the retaliatory attacks. Although the United States is a staunch ally of Israel, there is growing discomfort with Israel’s war against Hamas.
