The telephone conversation marked the second call between the two world leaders since Biden took office after defeating former President Donald Trump in the 2020 US election.
According to Chinese state media news agency Xinhua, Xi told Biden that America’s policy towards China had caused “serious difficulties” for relations between the two countries.

“If China and the US work together, both the country and the world will benefit; If China and the US face each other, both countries and the world will suffer. China-US relations are not a choice question of whether to do well, but a necessary question is how to do well,” Xi said, according to the Xinhua report cited by Xinhua. CNN, Friday (10/9/2021).
The Chinese leader said the two countries could continue dialogue to “promote coordination and cooperation” on issues such as climate change, COVID-19 and other international issues.
Meanwhile, according to a White House press statement, both Biden and Xi Jinping had conversations covering areas where the interests of the two countries converge, and areas where their interests, values and perspectives differ.

“They agreed to engage in both sets of issues in an open and straightforward manner. These discussions, as President Biden explained, are part of the United States’ ongoing efforts to responsibly manage the competition between the United States and the PRC,” the White House said.
