US: Police kill man with double leg amputation

In California, two police officers shot and killed a 36-year-old disabled man in the middle of the street as he tried to flee.

Two-leg amputated Anthony Lowe Jr. was killed by police officers in Huntington Park, California, who shot him.

According to the local police department, officers were called after Anthony Lowe Jr. allegedly stabbed someone. Once there, they wanted to arrest him but the father of two tried to escape by jumping out of his wheelchair.

As he was armed with a knife, the police first tried to taser him to neutralize him, without success. One of the officers then shot him and Anthony Lowe Jr. collapsed on his stomach. He died on the spot.

According to the police department’s report, the officer fired for fear that the 36-year-old suspect would throw the knife at him.

For its part, the family of Anthony Lowe Jr. questions the use of force by the police when the man was disabled and had both legs amputated.

According to his statements to the Los Angeles Times, the family claimed that he had to have his amputated because of a first confrontation with the police, in Texas this time.

A few images of the incident, extracted from surveillance cameras installed in the surroundings, have been published, but the Huntington Park police department does not intend to share any more.
