WASHINGTON – General Laura J Richardson, who heads the Pentagon’s Southern Command, claimed Thursday (19/1/2023) that Washington is in talks with nine Latin American countries.

According to Richardson, the talks are aimed at supplying Latin America with American weapons if they donate their own Russian stockpile of equipment to Ukraine.

Speaking to the Atlantic Council, a NATO-backed and US arms industry-funded think tank, Richardson stated, “A total of nine Latin American countries have Russian equipment, and the Pentagon is working to replace it with US equipment if those countries wish to donate it to Ukraine. .”

Richardson pointed out that these three countries, namely Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua, have close relations with Russia.

However, he did not clearly state whether these countries would be included in potential arms exchange talks, or whether the potential deal would only involve six more countries that agreed to cooperate with the US.

As is well known, the US actively opposes any policy that “benefits the Cuban government or its military, intelligence or security agencies”, and prohibits transactions with most of these entities.

Washington does not even recognize Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as the country’s legitimate leader and, similarly, considers the election of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega in 2021 to be a “sham”.

The US has agreed to sell more than 100 M1 Abrams tanks to Poland, to replace several hundred Soviet-era tanks donated to Ukraine by Warsaw.

Similarly, US President Joe Biden’s administration has transferred a US-made air defense system to Slovakia to replace the Soviet systems its government sent to Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon is pushing US arms manufacturers to increase production of weapons shipped to Ukraine from US military stockpiles.

According to some reports, the unprecedented effort to arm Kiev’s troops had brought American supplies to a near depletion.
