New York (ANTARA) – The Joe Biden administration has decided to increase its limited supply of monkeypox vaccine by allowing a new injection method that uses one-fifth more per injection.
The New York Times reported on Monday, citing senior officials with knowledge of the scheme.
The United States declared monkeypox a public health emergency last week in an effort to step up US response to the outbreak.
For the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to allow intradermal injection, which requires injection of one-fifth of the current dose into the skin instead of the full dose into fat, the Department of Health and Public Services (HHS) needs to establish a new emergency declaration, the report says. that allows regulators to apply for the FDA’s emergency use authority.

According to the NYT, the scheme is expected to be announced Tuesday afternoon.
The White House, HHS and the FDA did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
Earlier this August, Biden appointed two federal officials to coordinate the response to monkeypox following the declaration of a state of emergency by California, Illinois and New York.
Recently more than 80 countries, where monkeypox is not endemic have reported outbreaks of the viral disease.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared monkeypox a global health emergency as confirmed cases surpass 27,800 and non-endemic countries report their first deaths.
First discovered in monkeys in 1958, the disease has mild symptoms such as fever, pain and purulent skin and tends to recover within 2-4 weeks, the WHO said.
Monkeypox is spread through close physical contact and is rarely fatal.
