The US Embassy in Kabul said Americans still in Afghanistan should immediately leave the country on commercial flights that are still available.
“The US Embassy urges US citizens to leave Afghanistan immediately using available commercial flight options,” the US representative’s office said. Also read: Ghani calls sudden withdrawal of US troops the cause of worsening security situation in Afghanistan
“Given security conditions and staff reductions, the embassy’s ability to assist US citizens in Afghanistan is severely limited, even in Kabul,” he continued, as reported by Arab News on Sunday (8/8/2021).
This follows a similar warning by Britain asking its nationals to immediately confirm their return plans as soon as possible, citing the “deteriorating security situation” in Afghanistan.
The Taliban have overrun dozens of districts and border crossings with Pakistan, Iran and a number of Central Asian countries, since the withdrawal of US-led troops from Afghanistan in early May.
The group’s advances have fueled fears that they will regain power with similar vigor as they did in the 1990s. Also amid concerns that the war-torn country could descend into another civil war when foreign troops finish their departure at the end of the month.
The developments came shortly after the UN’s special envoy for Afghanistan, Deborah Lyons, said the war in Afghanistan had entered a “new, deadlier and more destructive phase with more than 1,000 civilians killed in the past month during Taliban attacks.
