With a score of 0: 4, the Bulgarian miracle Cvetana Pironkovová entered the quarterfinal duel of the US Open against 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams. In the first set, however, the expected difference between the two players was not known at all.
The Bulgarian, who has no ranking after the maternity break, made a much more confident impression in the first set. She moved well, she matched her opponents with the force of blows. Williams tried to end the exchanges quickly, but often did not succeed against a light-legged opponent.

The fate of the first set was decided by a single break at 2: 2, when the 32-year-old Bulgarian succeeded on the return, she did not hesitate in the service herself and after 41 minutes she took the lead 1: 0 for sets. Not even seven aces were enough for Williams in the opening set, Pironkova, on the other hand, boasted 87% success of winning balls after the first serve.
The second set in the sign of Serena
However, the failed introduction did not break the American woman. After mutually broken services from the introductory games, she took the initiative, significantly refined her game, and continued to help herself with excellent service.
With a score of 4: 3, she succeeded for the second time in a set on the return and closed the second set with a 6: 3 victory with three aces in the final game. Before the third set, Serena was proud of her 16: 3 balance on aces.

Ride even in the decisive set
The American tennis player continued to play the most aggressive game in the third set. Pironkova defended herself most of the time in exchanges, she lost her service right in the opening game of the decisive set.
Over time, the native of Plovdiv ceased to be enough for the opponent’s aggressive game. She lost her last hope of a reversal in the seventh game, when she failed to serve again. Williams did not miss the chance, she also won 6: 2 with a total of twenty aces and can celebrate advancing to the semifinals.
The six-time US Open winner advanced among the last four for the fourteenth time in her career.
