The second seeded Thiem managed a duel with last year’s finalist of the tournament in Friday’s semifinals and the third seeded Daniil Medvedev beat the Russian 6: 2 and twice 7: 6. The beast had much more work to do. He already lost 0: 2 to the sets with the Spaniard Pablo Carreň and won 3: 6, 2: 6, 6: 3, 6: 4 and 6: 3 in almost three and a half hours.
He became the first German after 26 years in the US Open final. He imitated his compatriot Michael Stich from 1994.
