US Open | Live blog and schedule day 6 – Wozniacki remains without a set loss, Paul struggles and wins

Welcome to Eurosport’s live blog where we follow the US Open every day. We will mainly post updates during the Dutch matches, but we will also follow all the other storylines in New York.

You can also find updates on the top events here, but we do not guarantee that we will also be liveblogging at night. Don’t miss a single rally via HBO Max!

Paul makes New York cheer

Tommy Paul is 3-0 down in the fourth set, but eventually pulls that set to him in the tiebreak. The American wins 7-6(5), 3-6, 1-6 and 6-7(3) and will face Jannik Sinner.

Diallo surprises

Tommy Paul is having a particularly tough time with Canadian Gabriel Diallo (ATP-143). The American loses the first set, still takes a 2-1 lead and now has to save a number of crucial break points. Are we going to a surprising fifth set?

Wozniacki back to the top?

Caroline Wozniacki won the Australian Open in 2018, but is now at 71st place on the WTA ranking. Nevertheless, the 34-year-old Dane is having an excellent US Open. She has not lost a set yet and now easily advances against Jessika Ponchet: 3-6, 2-6.

Summary of the Sand Shell

Watch a summary of how Botic van de Zandschulp lost to Jack Draper.

Highlights Of The Sand Shell – Draper – US Open

62 minutes

Ashlyn Krueger won in the second round against the super talent Mirra Andreeva, but she seems to have enjoyed it a bit too much. In 62 minutes Krueger is played home by Liudmila Samsonova.

Sinner simply by

Jannik Sinner has easily qualified for the fourth round of the US Open. The Italian saw his rivals Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic fly out one by one, but made no mistake against the Australian Christopher O’Connell. The job was done within two hours.

US Open | Sinner does not follow Alcaraz and Djokovic’s example and easily advances in New York

Spectacle in New York

Botic home

No, it wasn’t in the cards for Botic van de Zandschulp. The Dutchman lost in three sets to Jack Draper without much of a chance: 3-6, 4-6 and 2-6.

US Open | Van de Zandschulp cannot continue his stunt against Alcaraz and loses to Draper

Difficult task of the Zandschulp

Few problems for Sinner

Jannik Sinner certainly doesn’t have to worry about elimination in the third round for the time being. In contrast to Novak Djokovic, the Italian is convincing. He takes the first set with 6-1.

Botic must chase

Tweede break Draper

Oh, that’s a shame. Van de Zandschulp breaks back, but immediately loses his own service: 3-5.

Botic fights back

Botic van de Zandschulp was a break behind early, but fought back nicely to 3-4. The Dutchman was allowed to serve himself.

No luck for Goffin

It’s not David Goffin’s day. The Belgian’s match against Machac was over after 1 hour and 34. And not in his favor. With 6-3 6-1 6-2 the Czech was simply too strong for Goffin.

Paolini in two sets

Paolini needed only two sets to win her match against Putintseva. The Italian was clearly the better player today with 6-3 6-4.

Botic!

Botic van de Zandschulp takes on Jack Draper. The Dutchman starts his match against the Brit a bit awkwardly, but the match is still long.

Putintseva a Paolini off the stairs

Puntintseva and Paolini will start today in the Louis Armstrong Stadium. Goffin will face Machac in Stadium 17 and Erler/Middelkoop will face Granollers/Zeballes on court 12. Plenty of action in the first minutes of day 6 of the US Open 2024.

Botic in action

Botic van de Zandschulp will be competing against Jack Draper (in the second match in Grandstand). The 22-year-old Brit is number 25 in the world, while the Dutchman is in 74th place. The two top players on the world rankings will also be in action. Both Sinner and Swiatek will be in action again today in the Arthur Ashe Stadium. O’Connel and Pavlyuchenkova are the respective opponents.

what happened before?

There were plenty of sensational things happening last night. Let’s start with defending champion Novak Djokovic. He was eliminated by Australian Alexei Popyrin. ‘The Djoker’ had to believe it in four sets. It ended 6-4, 6-4, 2-6 and 6-4. The winners of 2022 and 2023 have already gone home early. What new sensation will follow?

Highlights Popyrin – Djokovic – US Open

Sovereign Sabalenka

Also an interesting match for the women. It was time for a ‘(White) Russian get-together’. Still with both neutral world flags at the time of play. It were the top players Ekaterina Alexandrova and Aryna Sabalenka who faced each other. Sabalenka, number two on the WTA list, won in three sets (2-6, 6-1 and 6-2). She will face the Belgian Elise Mertens in the next round.

Highlights Alexandrova – Sabalenka – US Open

Success for Mertens

Speaking of that Elise Mertens… The Belgian needed three sets, 7-6 5-7 4-6, to send the world number 14 home. Still surprising against the home player Madison Keys!

Highlights Keys – Mertens – US Open

Tiafoe & Shelton

Then there was an American ‘get-together’. But you can leave out the ‘you’. Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton made it an epic five-setter. It was Tiafoe who came out on top (4-6, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4 and 6-3). The American will now face Australian sensation Alexei Popyrin. So he defeated Djokovic.

Highlights Shelton – Tiafoe – US Open
