New York (SID) – Angelique Kerber made it into the round of 16 of the US Open after a comeback victory. The 33-year-old German number one prevailed with a 5: 7, 6: 2, 6: 3 success in a duel between two former tournament champions against the American Sloane Stephens and showed a convincing performance.
Now Kerber could expect a duel with the defending champion Naomi Osaka, who will meet Leylah Fernandez (Canada) in the third round. The three-time Grand Slam winner has a 4-1 record against the Japanese star player.
Kerber initially had a difficult time in the match against Stephens, who celebrated the title win in New York in 2017 and a year after her. The German top player fought her way from a 1: 4 deficit back to 5: 5 in the first set , but then made several mistakes in concentration in the decisive phase.
In the second round, the former world number one took command and was able to equalize before it became increasingly a nerve game in the third set, which Kerber won.
