US Open Draw, Sinner Returns to the Court: Time, Seeds, How It Works

The last Slam of the year, on the American hard court of Flushing Meadows, in New York, will begin on Monday 26 August, with the final on 8 September. Today, Thursday 22 August, the US Open main draw draw. In the men’s category, nine Italians (four seeds) including Jannik Sinner after the doping case. Five Italians will compete, led by the number five seed Jasmine Paulini.

Among the 32 seeds present in the men’s draw, in addition to Sinner, here are Lorenzo Musetti (n.18), Flavio Cobolli (n.30) and Matthew Arnaldi (n.31). They will try to play it, not as top seeds, Luciano Darderi, Matteo Berrettini, Lorenzo Sonego, Fabio Fognini e Luke Nardi. They did not pass the qualifying rounds instead Francis Passaro e Stephen Napolitano: the only Italian in the running to enter the magnificent 64 remains Mattia Bellucci.

Paolini leads the Italians at the US Open

There are five Italians who will be included in the women’s draw: together with Paolini here are Sarah Errani – with which he won the Olympic gold in doubles –, Elizabeth Cocciaretto, Lucy Bronzetti e Martina Trevisan. Eliminated in the qualifying tournament Lucrezia Stefanini.

The draw for the main draws of the US Open will be held at 6pm Italian time on Thursday, August 22. There is no television coverage planned in our country: updates on the official website and on the social pages of the American Slam.

How the US Open draw works

The unseeded players will open the draw and will be placed in the draw in order of exit. Sinner, the number 1 seed, will instead be automatically inserted in the highest part of the draw, the first quarter. Novak Djokovicnumber two, in the lowest one, the fourth quarter: they can only challenge each other in the final. The next phase of the draw will concern the 3rd seeds (Carlos Alcaraz) e 4 (Alexander Zverev), to determine who will be the favorite in the second and third quarters of the draw. One of the two could be Sinner’s possible opponent in the semifinals.

The next step will be the seeds from 5 to 8, who will be able to meet the top four only in the quarterfinals. The next step will be the seeds from 9 to 12, who will be able to meet the seeds from 5 to 8 in the round of 16, and the numbers between 13 and 16 of the seeding, who will have the hypothetical round of 16 against the best four. The next step will be the tennis players between the numbers 17 and 24, who should meet, on paper, the seeds between 9 and 16 in the third round. Finally, the athletes between 25 and 32, who will challenge the top eight in the world in the third round.
