Invited by the US Open for his final participation in the New York Grand Slam, Dominic Thiem was knocked out by Ben Shelton.
At a press conference, the 21-year-old American praised the winner of the 2020 edition of the tournament with a mature conviction.
“You hate to see a guy like that, such a nice guy, a good player, go through injuries and deal with everything he’s been through. But I think if I’ve learned anything from him, it’s that, you know, it’s an unforgiving sport. Things can change quickly. You can be at the top of your game, and your body doesn’t keep up or a terrible accident happens, injuries happen all the time. So tennis is not permanent. I think it’s something to learn and remember. He has obviously had a career that many people dream of. But yes, things can change quickly, so you have to be grateful for every minute I played here. »
