US Open: Alcaraz Victorious in Fourth Round, Sabalenková Awaits in Quarterfinals

“I played a very solid match and made few mistakes, so I’m very happy,” Alcaraz said in an on-court interview. “I’ll watch Jannik’s match against Sasch now. It will be a good match for sure. No matter who advances, it will be a difficult quarter-final,” he added.

The 20-year-old Alcaraz made the top eight at Flushing Meadows in his third appearance. At the US Open, he won his eleventh match in a row and did not lose a set for the third time this year. He beat Arnaldi, the world’s 61st player, who unexpectedly knocked out British Cameron Norrie’s tournament top 16, in the number of winning balls 31:22.

Twenty-nine-year-old Džábirová did not follow up her triumphs over Linda Nosková and Maria Bouzková. The three-time Grand Slam finalist, who has been struggling with illness since the beginning of the tournament, paid the price for 33 unforced errors against the 23rd player in the world, Cheng Qinwen. “I hope to come back stronger next year and have the support of these incredible fans again,” said the Tunisian.

Twenty-year-old Cheng Chin-wen improved her Grand Slam maximum by progressing to the top eight. She was the furthest so far in the round of 16 at last year’s Roland Garros. She called the win over Džabirová a breakthrough. “I always believe that if I play the tennis that I have, I can beat anybody,” she said.

Sabalenková awaits her in the quarterfinals. Last year’s semi-finalist, who will replace Poland’s Iga Šwiateková at the top of the ranking on Monday, did not lose a set even against tournament thirteenth seed Kasatkinová. A year older, they outplayed Russia 31:7 on the winning balls and celebrated progress in 76 minutes.

“I think I’m playing great tennis. But there is always something to improve and something to build on,” said Sabalenková in an interview on the court, who is aiming for her second Grand Slam title of the season after the Australian Open. “Cheng Chin-wen played great tennis against Uns. He moves very well and has good shots. I have to focus more on myself and my game than on her. If I show my tennis, I have a chance to win,” said the semi-finalist of the last two years of the US Open.

Former world number one and tournament top three Medvedev had to turn the match against De Minaur. He lost the first set after two lost serves, then the native of Moscow was 100% on serve, he also gave 11 aces. In New York, he is in the quarterfinals for the fourth time in the last five years and will challenge compatriot Andrei Rublev.

The twelfth-seeded Zverev is also among the top eight. He beat Sinner, who was better placed by six rungs, in challenging conditions after four hours and 40 minutes. Against the Italian opponent, he collected 16 aces and 56 winning balls. The 2020 tournament finalist will face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz of Spain in the quarterfinals.
