In 2017, this caused major computer problems at Ukrainian companies, but also elsewhere in the world, including in the port of Rotterdam† In the US, the damage caused to hospitals and the pharmaceutical industry, among others, was estimated at nearly 1 billion dollars (about 939 million euros). In October 2020, a federal US jury indicted the six of them for a series of digital crimes.

The suspects had prepared a cyber attack last month by infecting a thousand computer systems so that they could be taken over at any moment. Intervention by the US and Great Britain prevented that. Before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, both countries had already warned about this digital warfare.

According to Washington, the wanted state hackers who have targeted critical infrastructure in the US are Yuri Andrijenko, Sergei Detistov, Pavel Frolov, Anatoli Kovalev, Artem Ochichenko and Petr Pliskin. They work for the GROe unit 74455, also known among those in the know as Sandworm, Voodoo Bear, Telebots and Iron Viking. The ministry wants to find out more about who they are, where they reside and who they work with.
