The United States does not yet see good reasons to assume that Russia will limit its attention to the Donbass.

“We have evidence that the Russians failed to achieve their original goals. And that, as you well know, was to take Kyiv in just a few days. So, because of this, I think Russia is reassessing, and they made it clear, that they are going to change their tactics, but let’s wait a bit. Over the next few days, the United States, in close cooperation with allies and the government of Ukraine, will look for evidence of this shift, “Smith said.
Smith also commented on whether NATO will provide Ukraine with the fighter jets it needs to fight Russia. In her words, “it’s an evolving conversation,” but in the end, no.
“We have spoken with President Zelensky many times in recent weeks. We have heard requests for help. On many occasions we have delivered anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons, we are assessing their air defense needs. But if you are asking about Soviet-era jets (MiGs that Poland – UNIAN), the answer will be no. The United States has decided that Poland’s proposal is untenable… This is a sovereign decision, they can make this sovereign decision. But now the United States is very focused on air defense needs,” she added.
