US: No change in our policy on Ukraine’s use of long-range missiles – 2024-09-15 16:50:55

The US does not plan to announce any new policy on Ukraine and its use of long-range missiles, the White House said.

“There is no change in our opinion on providing Ukraine with long-range strike capabilities for use inside Russia,” White House National Security spokesman John Kirby told reporters.

“I wouldn’t expect any major announcement on that,” after talks between US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Kirby added.

At the same time, the White House spokesman said that the US “takes Vladimir Putin’s threats seriously.”

The Russian president warned that “if the West allows Ukraine to carry out strikes on Russian territory with long-range missiles that have been supplied to Kiev by Western countries, this would mean that ‘NATO countries are at war with Russia.’

If this decision is made, it would mean nothing less than the direct involvement of NATO countries in the war in Ukraine. This would change the very nature of war. It would mean that NATO countries are at war against Russia,” Putin said in a video posted on the Telegram platform.

Scholz: “Germany has made a clear decision”

Germany’s chancellor has said his country will not send long-range missiles to Ukraine, despite Ukraine’s insistence on the weapons.

In a press conference on Friday 9/13, Scholz said: “Germany has made a clear decision about what we will do and what we will not do. This decision will not be changed,” reports Agence France-Presse.

Germany has repeatedly refused to send Ukraine its long-range Taurus missiles.

Earlier today, Scholz’s spokesman, Steffen Hempstreit, said that “the weapons that the US and Britain are now discussing” have a longer range than anything Germany has supplied. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said for his part that what the US and Britain are discussing “is their business”.

Nebenzia: “NATO will find itself against a nuclear power”

Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told the UN Security Council on Friday 9/13 that if Western countries allow Ukraine to carry out long-range strikes on Russia, then NATO countries will “wage direct war with Russia”.

“NATO will be a direct part of hostilities against a nuclear power. I think you should not forget that and think about the consequences,” Nebenzia told the 15-member council.

Starmer: “Russia started the war and it can stop it”

Earlier, during his first visit to Washington, Britain’s new prime minister said: “Russia started this conflict by invading Ukraine, and Russia can end this conflict immediately.”

“Ukraine has the right to self-defence,” Starmer told reporters, arguing that Britain had provided “training” and “capability” to help Ukraine repel the Russian attack.

He also stressed that “obviously there needs to be further discussions about the nature of that capability,” implying that the discussion will revolve around helping Ukraine with weapons and military equipment.
