Washington, United States of America (CNN) – Two American officials revealed to CNN that a US Navy warship operating in the Middle East intercepted several projectiles near the coast of Yemen, on Thursday.
One American official said that the missiles were fired by Iran-backed Houthi fighters. While the other official said that two or three missiles were intercepted.
The two sources indicated that it is not yet clear what target the missiles were targeting, and it is possible that the missiles were fired at the ship “USS Carney” or were launched at another target.
This comes amid great concerns about potential Iranian moves as tensions continue to escalate in the Middle East in the wake of Hamas’ attack on Israel, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s declaration of war on Hamas.
The American destroyer USS Carney crossed the Suez Canal into the Red Sea on Wednesday. The US Fleet Forces Command said in a post on social media platforms that it “will help ensure maritime security and stability in the Middle East.”
