Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The United States (US) Navy said it shot down a drone in the Red Sea launched by the Houthi group Wednesday (20/11/2023). This happened when the assistance from the Yemeni militia to paralyze Israel became more intense.
Quoting the report Associated Press, an official said the US destroyer, USS Carney, saw an Iranian-made KAS-04 drone passing by. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the military operation, which has not been made public.
Wednesday’s shooting came a day after a drone Iran flew within 1,500 yards of the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower while it was conducting flight operations in international waters in the Arabian Gulf.
Navy Vice Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of US Naval Forces Central Command, said the drone “violated safety precautions” by staying no more than 10 nautical miles from the ship. The drone ignored several warnings but eventually turned around.
So far, the Houthis have launched several drone towards Israel. This was carried out as an act of solidarity with the Hamas militia and the people of Gaza, who are currently suffering from Israeli attacks on the territory.
Israel launched weeks of massive airstrikes in the Palestinian enclave and stepped up ground attacks in response to the deadly Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, which killed around 1,200 Israelis.
The Gaza Ministry of Health put the number of Palestinians killed in the Israeli operation at more than 15,000. Thousands of others were also reported injured.
However, the fighting was stalled several times over the past week thanks to hostage negotiations between the warring parties, with Hamas agreeing to exchange Israeli and foreign citizens for Palestinian prisoners held in Israel.
Meanwhile, apart from firing and launching drone, the Houthis also began detaining several vessels linked to Israeli entities or citizens. The group said the crew of the confiscated ships were being held hostage and subject to Islamic law.
