Remains of the balloon that flew at high altitude through US airspace last week and was brought down by the US military over the country’s east coast on Saturday have been recovered by the Navy. The remains were found off the coast of South Carolina.
The Americans suspect that it was a spy balloon. But China insisted that the balloon was used for meteorological research, among other things, and that it had been blown off course by the wind.
The issue led to rising tensions between Washington and Beijing. US Secretary of State Blinken, who was due to go to China this week for talks, has postponed his trip.
The navy calls on people who find more remains of the balloon not to recover them themselves, but to warn the authorities.
