WASHINGTON – Navy United States of America (US) officially decommissioned a warship at a reported cost of USD 362 million or around IDR 5.5 trillion. The ship was retired after operating less than five years out of the planned 25 years.

The battleship USS Sioux City, a Freedom-class Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), was commissioned into the US Navy on November 17, 2018. Approximately four years and nine months later, the crew lowered her flag for the last time in a ceremony at Naval Station Mayport in Florida last August 14th.

During her short operating life, the ship completed four deployments in the 4th, 5th and 6th Fleet’s areas of operation.

Among several Sioux City deployments was one in European waters last year, marking a first for the LCS. The ship also assists the Coast Guard in drug interdiction missions.

Sioux City, named after the city in Iowa, was the fourth LCS ship to be relatively recently decommissioned, despite having a much shorter operating life than the others. In September last year, the US Navy decommissioned the USS Coronado’s Independence-class LCS after only eight years of service.

“While our vessel’s service ends today, her legacy does not,” said Capt. Daniel Reiher, commander of the LCS Atlantic Training Facility, at the Sioux City decommissioning ceremony.

“For the coming years, the Seafarers serving on the ships will pass on the lessons learned and career experiences gained,” he added.

“As those lessons and experiences are used to forge those who follow us, Sioux City’s legacy will strengthen our Navy for generations to come,” he added, striking a positive note on a complicated situation resulting from years of problems with the Littoral Combat Ship program. from InsiderThursday (17/8/2023).

The goal of the LCS program was to build a fleet of small, agile surface ships that could cheaply handle a variety of missions and operate as light frigates and nearshore patrol vessels, but the vessels have long failed to live up to expectations.
