(CNN) U.S. National Security Advisor Sullivan said on Monday that the U.S. military’s ammunition stockpile was at a low level as it continued to provide military aid to Russia’s invaded Ukraine.

said in an interview with CNN. The aide said the stockpile of 155mm ammunition was relatively low when the Biden administration took office. The ammunition is also the standard ammunition of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Sullivan said the administration has since learned that replenishing ammunition stockpiles to acceptable levels will take years, not months. He also said it was a tough task in continuing to support Ukraine militarily.

“President Biden has directed the Pentagon to ensure that the United States has the capacity to rapidly produce all necessary ammunition for any and all conflicts that may arise at any time,” he said. “Our ammunition supply capacity is increasing every month,” he added.
