Several well-known nature parks in the US state of California are (partly) closed due to persistent winter weather. There is, among other things, a thick layer of snow in Yosemite National Park and around the giant Sequoia trees.
Even in Death Valley, normally a desert and the driest place on earth, many roads are closed due to snow or flood damage.
Yosemite National Park will remain closed indefinitely. More than 4.5 meters of snow fell in parts of the park. Sequoia and Kings Canyon is partially inaccessible. The roads are cleared of snow and are therefore not passable for visitors.
In Redwood, several roads were closed due to fallen trees due to the storm. There was also a power outage.
While many visitors will be disappointed, the US Department of Water Resources is relieved. The precipitation has dramatically reduced California’s ongoing drought.
California has been battling extreme weather for some time now. Seventeen people have already been killed by the weather. At least 34,000 residents had to evacuate. The weather caused mudslides and flooding.
