Jakarta – A number of leaders of the United States (US) Muslim community refused to attend the annual breaking of the fast (bukber) agenda at the White House. The rejection occurred as a form of protest against US President Joe Biden’s support for Israel in the genocide in Gaza.
This criticism emerged at the event scheduled for Tuesday (2/4/2024) evening. One of these rejections was carried out by the Muslim community in the United States (US), which consists of the advocacy council for Muslim civil rights, the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR).
“The American Muslim community has said from the start that they do not want to be ‘at the same table’ with a White House that allows Israel to massacre Palestinians in Gaza,” said CAIR Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell to Al-Jazeera, quoted Thursday (4/4/2024).
On the other hand, White House Spokesperson, Karine Jean-Pierre, said the Muslim community hopes to meet Joe Biden for other things. They asked for a meeting to discuss problems in Gaza.
“They want to make sure that there is an opportunity to discuss the issues at hand,” he said.
American Muslim Development Director for Palestine, Mohammad Habehh, emphasized that Biden cannot claim to care about the American Muslim community. Moreover, if he does not end his support for Israel.
“No matter how many meetings we have, no matter how many people show up, no matter how many conversations are had, the White House refuses to make changes.” Habehh said.
In a Washington Post report, Emgage, a Muslim group, hopes that the Joe Biden administration can use its influence on Israel to end the conflict in Gaza, namely by calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire.
