Jakarta –
A Muslim group that supports the Vice President United States Kamala Harris in the 2024 general election, they announced they were disbanding and withdrawing support for the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate. This is why the Harris campaign team refused to allow a spokesperson Palestine took the stage at the Democratic National Convention (DNC).
“We cannot in good conscience proceed with Muslim Women for Harris-Walz, given this new information from the Uncommitted movement, that Vice President Harris’ team rejected their request to have a Palestinian American spokesperson to be on stage at the DNC,” Muslim Women for Harris-Walz said in a statement, reported New York PostSaturday (24/8/2024).
The decision came after the Harris-Walz campaign refused to allow a Palestinian speaker on the main stage, despite protests from the Uncommitted National Movement, which had staged a sit-in outside the conference last Wednesday night. The incident prompted some Democratic lawmakers to criticize the convention’s organizers for “making a terrible mistake.”

A delegation of the Non-Aligned National Movement had asked for a Palestinian spokesperson, arguing that while the family of Israeli host Hersh Goldberg-Polin was given the opportunity to speak, similar representation for Palestinians was denied.
Muslim Women for Harris-Walz highlighted the contrast between the sympathy shown to the families of Israeli hostages and the lack of support for the Palestinian perspective.
The Democratic National Convention has faced criticism for not responding fully to calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and not giving space to Palestinian voices. The convention took place in Chicago, which has a large Palestinian community.
