US moves embassy in Ukraine from Kiev to Lviv / Article

“The embassy continues to work with the Ukrainian government,” said US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in a statement, but “we urge all US citizens remaining in Ukraine to leave the country immediately.”

As Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday, several Western countries, including the United States, are making a big mistake in moving embassies from Kiev over fears of a Russian attack.

“It is a big mistake that some embassies – well, it is their decision – are being relocated to the west of Ukraine,” Zelensky said after several international missions had opened offices in Lviv.

“There is no Western Ukraine, there is Ukraine, it is united. Therefore, if, God forbid, something will happen, it will be everywhere,” warned the president.

The US State Department said on Monday that key staff from the US Embassy in Ukraine had moved to Lviv.

Canada announced the temporary transfer of embassy staff to Lviv on Saturday.

The German mission in the eastern regions of Ukraine transfers the consulate from the Dnipro to Lviv.

At the same time, the European Union has announced that its representations and Member States’ embassies will not be closed and will continue to work.

Russia has now concentrated more than 100,000 troops on Ukraine’s borders, raising fears of a new invasion of a neighboring country.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened that if Moscow does not receive the “security guarantees” he has demanded, he will have to take “military technical measures”.
