“Although Russia has announced that it is moving its forces back to the garrison, we have not seen it yet,” the minister told reporters in Warsaw.
“In fact, we are seeing even more force being transferred to this region, to this border region,” he said.
The United States has also seen Russian activities such as “moving closer to the border, dispersing troops, increasing logistics capacity.”
“All these signs indicate that he (Russian President Vladimir Putin) will retain the potential to launch an attack.”
“There is still time and space for diplomacy,” Austin said.
“The United States, together with our allies and partners, including Poland, has offered Putin a way out of the crisis and towards greater security.”
Austin also confirmed that the United States plans to sell 250 Abrams tanks to Poland, while stating that work is still on schedule. The US State Department said on Friday that the relevant authorities had approved the sale of tanks and other armaments to Poland for six billion dollars and that it still needs the approval of Congress.
The United States has pledged an additional 4,700-strong force in Poland in response to Russia’s growing military presence near Ukraine.
With the deployment of additional forces, the number of US troops in Poland on a rotating basis will reach 10,000.
Washington estimates that Russia has pulled in about 130,000 troops from Ukraine’s borders. Despite this concentration of forces, Russia says it does not intend to attack Ukraine and accuses the West of causing panic.
The West has announced that Russia will face extensive economic sanctions if it intends to attack Ukraine.
The situation has been exacerbated by the extensive military exercises that Russia has recently organized, including joint Russian-Belarusian maneuvers in Belarus.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian government and Russian-backed militant gangs in Eastern Ukraine are exchanging charges of gunfire and other ceasefire violations.
The United States has expressed concern that Moscow intends to create an excuse to invade Ukraine.
