US Military Retaliates Against Pro-Iranian Forces in Jordan: The Reality of America’s Vast Global Military Network

For the United States, Japan is a “floating and sinking aircraft carrier” to maintain supremacy in the Indo-Pacific.

On January 28, 2024, a U.S. military base in the desert region of northeastern Jordan was attacked by a drone attack by hostile pro-Iranian forces, resulting in three deaths and approximately 40 injuries.

US President Biden decided to take immediate retaliation, and on February 2nd sent out B-1 strategic bombers to attack pro-Iranian armed groups hiding in neighboring Iraq and Syria, as well as bases of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (Pas Aran). A pinpoint attack was made with a precision-guided bullet.

This incident may have surprised many people, wondering once again, “Are the U.S. forces even advancing into remote areas of Jordan?”

In 2013, then-President Barack Obama shocked the world by declaring, “America is no longer the world’s policeman.” It has been 10 years since then, and it is true that the United States has withdrawn from the two wars in which it deployed large troops, in Afghanistan and Iraq, and has also closed down the countless US military bases scattered around the world and given back its “world policeman badge.” No wonder.

However, this time, unexpectedly, the United States has continued to station its military around the world, giving us a glimpse of the reality of its inability to stop even if it wanted to.

In fact, the US military’s vast military network spans the globe, with some sarcastically calling it the “army on which the sun never sets.” There are well over 50 countries and regions where soldiers wearing the Stars and Stripes are stationed, and I am once again surprised by how large the numbers are.

According to “Military Balance (2023 Edition)” published every year by the British think tank “International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS),” the U.S. military has just under 230,000 troops stationed overseas, with soldiers stationed on every continent except Antarctica. There is no other country on this scale other than the United States, and China and Russia are unlikely to be able to imitate it.
