US Military Conducts Emergency Airdrop of Food in Gaza After Deadly Encounter with Israeli Troops
In a dramatic response to the deadly encounter between Israeli troops and Palestinians in Gaza, the US military conducted an emergency airdrop of food to provide humanitarian assistance to the region. President Joe Biden authorized the operation after more than 100 Palestinians were killed during a chaotic incident where they were trying to obtain goods from an aid convoy. The airdrop, which took place on Saturday, involved three US military C-130 cargo planes dropping 66 bundles containing approximately 38,000 meals.
Coordinated with the Royal Jordanian Air Force, the airdrop aimed to provide aid to civilians in Gaza who are facing dire circumstances. President Biden expressed his commitment to increasing aid to Gaza, stating, “The amount of aid flowing to Gaza is not nearly enough and we will continue to pull out every stop we can to get more aid in.”
The US Central Command stated that the operation involved both US Air Force and Royal Jordanian Air Force aircraft, as well as Army Soldiers specialized in aerial delivery of supplies. The airdrop is expected to be the first of many, as the US seeks to address the dire situation in Gaza.
The planes dropped military Meals Ready to Eat (MREs), which are shelf-stable meals containing a day’s worth of calories in each sealed package. The locations for the airdrop were carefully chosen to ensure the safety of civilians accessing the aid. After the airdrop, US officials monitored the sites and witnessed civilians approaching and distributing food among themselves.
The decision to conduct airdrops was made in response to the tragic events that unfolded when hundreds of people rushed towards aid trucks delivering supplies to the north of Gaza. Palestinians claim that Israeli troops shot into the crowds, while Israel maintains that warning shots were fired and many of the deaths were due to trampling. The incident highlighted the risks associated with ground transport, prompting the US to opt for airdrops as a safer alternative.
White House national security spokesperson John Kirby emphasized that while the airdrops are a supplement to ground transportation, they have the advantage of quickly delivering aid to specific locations. The C-130 aircraft, known for its ability to land in austere environments, can airlift up to 42,000 pounds of cargo. The crews are skilled in rigging cargo onto pallets and safely dropping them from the aircraft using parachutes.
The use of airdrops as a means of distributing aid is seen as a measure of last resort, as it is not considered an efficient method. However, given the dire circumstances in Gaza and the limited access to supplies, the US military saw it as a necessary step to provide immediate assistance.
