The Democratic Party managed to limit the damage better than expected in the mid-term elections, denying former President Donald Trump an electoral sweep of Republicans, he is betting on him in the White House.
US President Joe Biden praised Wednesday’s election, describing it as a “good day for democracy”, noting that he “intends” to run for a second term in 2024, but said he will confirm it “all. beginning of next year “.
Republicans are expected to take control of the House of Representatives, but Biden said a “giant red wave” did not materialize as expected.
The US president, who is a Democrat, has said he is ready to work with Republicans, adding that next week he will invite leaders of both parties to the White House to discuss how to achieve this.
One of the key seats in the Senate, Georgia, will be decided in a ballot next month. And if the Democrats win in Arizona and the Republicans in Nevada, as expected, the majority in the Senate will depend on who gets the seat in Georgia.
In his first speech after the midterm elections, Biden said, “The American people have spoken and proved once again that democracy is what we are.”
He said his party lost fewer seats in the House of Representatives than would be expected, on average, for a large party still in office.
Biden highlighted his work so far in recovering from the pandemic, rebuilding state infrastructure and fighting inflation.
The US president stressed that he will continue to work across the political spectrum to fulfill the aspirations of the people.
“Democracy has been tested in recent years, but the American people have spoken with their votes,” he added.
Speaking of working with a Republican-controlled House or Senate, Biden said he was “open to any good ideas.”
He added that he would not support any legislation he believed would harm working class Americans, including tax cuts for the wealthy.
“Federal taxes will not increase for anyone with an income of less than $ 40,000 a year,” he said.
He added that it also won’t support any changes that reduce Medicare or Social Security.
Voter opinion polls after the vote indicated that the economy and inflation were their biggest concerns.
Biden said the election results made it clear that Americans don’t want their politicians to fall into the trap of endless political warfare.
“We have to look to the future … and this future is as bright as possible,” he added.
Mid-term elections determine the fate of the president’s agenda during the remainder of his term.
And if the Democrats lose control of the House or Senate, the Republicans will have the power to block Biden’s plans.
