Outgoing New York City mayor Bill de Blasio has begun running for governor of the state of the same name. The governor will be elected next year, and the Democrat has already submitted documents to the state Electoral Council to run for office, several US media outlets reported.

De Blasio has already been elected mayor twice and is legally prohibited from starting a third term. The New York City Council will elect a new mayor on Tuesday.
De Blasio has not officially said anything about his candidacy for governor, but media and staff believe he is making an attempt. He would not be the only Democrat in the race for the governorship of the state that is almost 3.5 times larger than the Netherlands and has about twenty million inhabitants. The justice minister of the state, Letitia James, wants that, for example, as does Kathy Hochul, among others, who has held the post ad interim since August.
Hochul became temporary governor of the state in August after Democrat Andrew Cuomo was forced to resign after more than a decade over a sexual harassment scandal.
