US media: Democrats retain majority in Senate | Abroad

It appears Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez Masto will defeat her Republican opponent Adam Laxalt in the Nevada midterm elections. The American media report it. It would mean Democrats would get 50 Senate seats and retain a majority.

The tally currently stands at 50 seats for Democrats and 49 for Republicans. A second round will take place in Georgia State on Dec. 6 because the results were too close together. If the Democrats also win in that state, the party can expand its majority to 51 seats.

But even if the Democrats fail to win in Georgia, they will retain control of the Senate until 2024. With a 50/50 vote, Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris has the casting vote.

tv channels MSNBC in Cnn awarded Cortez Masto the victory in Nevada after he had a 0.5% lead in the vote count. In the preliminary results, he has 48.7 percent of the vote behind him, compared to Laxalt’s 48.2 percent.

It is almost a law of American politics that the incumbent president’s party suffers (often heavy) losses in the midterm elections. But the Democrats are doing well this midterm, which is surprising given President Biden’s waning popularity. Analysts had already predicted that the battle for the Senate would be tense.

Cortez Masto is a former Nevada Attorney General. He has criticized his rival Laxalt for his conservative stance on abortion rights and his denial of Donald Trump’s defeat in the 2020 presidential election. For the former president, the loss of Laxalt is another setback after which other candidates he supported have previously lost.

For President Joe Biden, keeping the Senate is a win. In Catherine Cortez Masto’s victory, Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer sees confirmation that his party is on the right track and that voters ultimately don’t care about Trump-backed extremist candidates.
