US Manufacturing Activity Contracts Again, Marking 12th Consecutive Month of Decline

Manufacturing activity contracted for the 12th consecutive month in the United States in October, with a pace which even increased compared to the previous month.

According to the results of the latest survey from the Institute for Supply Management (ISM), the index measuring the manufacturing sector fell to 46.7 last month, a drop of 2.3 points from 49 in september.

Economists on average expected a stable figure around 49.

The most marked declines came from the sub-indexes measuring new orders and employment, both of which fell below the 50 point mark which separates contraction and growth in activity.

The order intake component fell from 49.2 to 45.5 from one month to the next, while that of employment fell to 46.8, compared to 51.2 in September.
