WASHINGTON – The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported more than 1,000 new cases of monkeypox virus (monkeypox) over the past 24 hours.

The figure beats the temporary daily infection count and puts the United States (US) at the center of the new outbreak.

The CDC confirmed 1,048 new infections on Wednesday (7/27/2022), bringing the total number of monkeypox cases to 4,639 nationwide.

To date, more than 18,000 infections have been seen in 75 countries, with Spain now holding the number two position with 3,738 cases.

However, the increase in the US can be explained in part by the increase in testing capacity, which was recently increased from 10,000 tests to 80,000 tests per week.

According to a report Wednesday in Politico, health officials will also make monkeypox a “nationally notifiable condition.”

Authorities instructed states to collect and share data in an effort to further expand testing and surveillance.

However, despite the huge spike in monkeypox cases, the US infection rate remains below that of other countries experiencing outbreaks, accounting for around one case per 100,000 people.
