The comments come shortly after the US Supreme Court decided to withdraw the legal protection of abortion in the country, which in practice means that many states governed by Republicans will prohibit access to abortion in their territory.
“It’s critical that people understand that a number of state officials and legislative bodies are already discussing laws that would prevent travel” to access an abortion, explained attorney Julie Rikelman during a call with reporters.
Rikelman, who was the lawyer in charge of defending before the Supreme Court the need to invalidate a Mississippi law that prohibits abortion after 15 weeks of gestation, said that the organization will challenge these laws but that their constitutionality will end up being decided in court. .
