La Paz, August 3, 2023 (ATB Digital).- Thomas Becker, a lawyer for the victims of the Gas War in 2003, also from Senkata and Sacaba, affirmed that the former president of the APDHB Amparo Carvajal did not investigate the massacres during the 2019 post-electoral conflict.
“She (Carvajal) never supported the victims of the Senkata and Sacaba massacres. Her team decided not to participate in the investigations, ”the lawyer recalled.
In an interview with La Razón Radio, Becker stated that between 2019 and 2020 he came to Bolivia four times to request information about what happened, but the members of the office of the Permanent Assembly of Human Rights (APDHB) told him that they did not investigate the fact.
“The most important human rights institution did not investigate the largest massacre since 2003 in the last 15 years (…); they choose who are victims and who are not, ”he claimed.
She said that, in one of her visits, a journalist from an international media outlet (The Guardia) was thrown out of the APDHB offices for considering that in 2019 there was a “coup d’état”. “This institution has to be impartial, not a political space,” she questioned.
In addition, he recalled that Carvajal demonstrated his support for shock groups and “parastatals”, such as the Cochala Youth Resistance (RJC) and the Cruceñista Youth Union (UJC). Even Carvajal in a meeting called them “necessary resistance.”
On the other hand, Becker assured that during the mandate of Jeanine Áñez, members of the APDHB and members of the Áñez government collaborated and discussed together on the state channel (Bolivia TV). “It is clear that the government participated in the events (of Senkata and Sacaba),” she recalled.
Finally, he warned that the international community saw Carvajal’s actions and “there are going to be institutions that will take stronger and more public positions on Carvajal and his APDHB.”
