U.S. auto safety regulators said on Monday they were opening an investigation into Amazon Zoox’s 2022 unit’s self-certification of a robotaxi without traditional driving controls.
In September, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) asked Zoox to answer questions about the basis on which it certified the vehicle and that review is ongoing. NHTSA said Monday it was opening an audit query to determine whether Zoox’s “certification basis depended on unilaterally developed test procedures or determinations that certain standards were inapplicable due to the vehicle’s unique configuration.”
