US justice orders Google to open its application store to competition – Diario La Página –

A US judge ordered Google this Monday to authorize the installation of competing platforms in its Google Play application store, although the group reported that it will appeal the decision.

The order is the result of Google’s judicial defeat in an antitrust case brought by video game designer Epic Games, in which a California jury determined that Google maintains an illegal monopoly through its store on the Android operating system for mobile devices.

Google indicated that it will appeal the resolution.

“We look forward to continuing to present our case on appeal, and will continue to advocate for what is best for Android developers, device manufacturers and billions of users around the world,” said Lee-Anne Mulholland, the company’s vice president of regulatory affairs.

Phones using the Android operating system have around 70% of the global smart device market.

A jury in San Francisco took a few hours in December to decide against Google, finding that the company pursued several illegal strategies to maintain a monopoly on its app store on phones with the Android operating system.

Google also faces antitrust proceedings in another federal case in Virginia over its dominance of the online advertising market.
