US, Japan, and South Korea Condemn Russian Invasion of Ukraine and Discuss Regional Security

The US president, in a speech following a trilateral summit with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yun Suk-yeol, called Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s argument for a full-scale invasion of Ukraine “ridiculous.”

Russia has already lost. It cannot achieve its original goal, which it stated. It is impossible…” he said.

Biden also noted that the consequences of the Russian war against Ukraine “go far beyond Europe.”

“Imagine if we didn’t do anything. And it was immediately clear … that we were in a situation where this could happen anywhere. If we stopped, what message would it send to China regarding Taiwan? What signal would it send to everyone the world?” – voiced the opinion of the President of the United States.

“The invasion is not only a European problem; there has not been such an invasion since World War II,” he said.

Biden praised Tokyo’s reaction to Russia’s full-scale military aggression against Ukraine.

He also stated that Japan “also showed strong leadership in the G7 and made a significant contribution in financial and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, as well as in (providing) non-lethal military equipment.”

US, Japan and South Korea hold summit

On August 18 in Washington, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, US President Joe Biden and South Korean leader Yun Suk-yeol met for the first time in a trilateral summit format. It was planned that during the meeting they would discuss the threats of China and North Korea in the Indo-Pacific region, as well as the situation in East Asia as a whole.

The summit participants issued a joint statement on the peaceful resolution of the conflict in the Taiwan Strait and announced annual meetings in a similar format.

Also, the leaders of the United States, Japan and South Korea said they would continue their support for Ukraine and plan to impose new sanctions against the Russian Federation.
