Quoted from the page Live Science, the first flu case occurred on October 6, and since then, the University Health Service (UHS) has diagnosed an additional 528 people with flu cases. During Sunday, November 1, 27.2 percent of the flu tests administered came back positive for a total of 198 new flu cases identified on campus.
On Sunday, November 8, the positive test rate jumped to 37 percent, when an additional 313 people were diagnosed with the flu.
Currently, as of October 6, there have been 1,038 people infected with influenza at the American university.
Local health officials working with researchers School of Public Health and Michigan Medicine to identify the type flu behind the epidemic. Initial conclusions suggested that the outbreak was a subtype of influenza A virus called H3N2.
“Although we are often starting to see some flu activity now, the size of this outbreak is unusual,” Dr Juan Luis Marquez, medical director at the Washtenaw County Health Department (WCHD), told the BBC. The University Record.
“This outbreak does not necessarily have an immediate impact on the wider local community, but raises concerns about what flu season might bring,” he explained.
To learn more about the outbreak, the university recently launched an investigation with the CDC, WCHD, and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
During an investigation called Epi-Aid (short for Epidemiologic Assistance), CDC officials will visit the site for one to three weeks to address what is considered an urgent public health issue.
The investigative team will assess how quickly the flu spreads on campus and what factors seem to increase the risk of transmission. They will also evaluate the flu vaccination status on campus and collect samples swab of those infected with the flu, to check strain circulating influenza virus.
