MADRID, 31 (EUROPA PRESS)
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohamad Yavad Zarif on Thursday accused US President Donald Trump of seeking an excuse to “start a war” against Iran in the Persian Gulf.
“The intelligence that comes to us from Iraq indicates that there is a plot to fabricate a pretext and start a war,” said the minister in a message posted on Twitter.
Thus, he stressed that Iran “does not seek any type of war, but that it will directly and openly defend its people, their security and their vital interests.” In this sense, he has indicated that the US president should “focus on the pandemic”, instead of sending military planes and warships to the Gulf.
The United States has been expanding its military presence in the region to prevent any kind of retaliation for the death of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani. Next week will be a year after the attack ordered by Trump against the former head of the Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guard.
Iranian President Hasan Rohani has indicated that the country still intends to avenge Soleimani’s assassination, but has made no specific threats. “The order to kill the general is one of Trump’s unforgettable sins … One day the Iranian people will take revenge,” he said.
